Magnetic Appcessories

Tangible interface designer and inventor Andrea Bianchi, along with his colleague, Ian Oakley (University of Madeira / Carnegie Mellon Europe), have come with a novel approach to interacting with a mobile device. Using the magnetometer built into most modern smartphones, Bianchi and Oakley have created a series of tangible user interfacedemonstrations that go beyond what’s achievable with capacitive touch displays.

Kinetic Rain

Berlin firm ART+COM just completed this stunning new kinetic sculpture in Terminal 1 of Changi Airport in Singapore. Kinetic Rain consists of two sets of 608 suspended raindrops made from lightweight aluminum covered in copper which are raised and lowered in a 15-minute computationally designed choreography controlled from motors embedded in the ceiling. ART+COM created a similar though somewhat smaller piece for the BMW Museum in 2008.

'Immaterials: Light painting WiFi' has spread across the internet and become a popular cultural phenomena over the last year. Today I want to write about a couple of other kinds of impact that the film and the visualisations have created. We have observed the concepts, arguments and visual language being taken up and interpreted as new and derivative work by other practitioners. This points to a different sort of cultural propagation: the spectacle of the film created a momentum that has driven others to re-interpret, re-create and extend the work in many different directions.

'Appmates' toys that work with new iPad app

Disney's next big iPad app? There are toy cars for that. The entertainment company has unveiled a new range of physical toys called Appmates, which will be used to interact with apps on Apple's tablet.

The first Disney brand to get the Appmates treatment is Pixar's Cars. There will be six toy cars sold in packs of one or two for £12.99 and £19.99 respectively, which go on sale in October. They will be sold in Disney's physical stores and on its website, as well as in Apple's real-world and online stores.

The companion iPad app will be free to download. It includes a mode for children who don't own one of the physical toys (or at least don't have one to hand).

Og for å hjelpe deg underveis sender appen sanntids-tilbakemeldinger til antrekket. Via elektriske komponenter i hofte- og skulderpartiet får brukeren en haptisk feedback slik at bevegelser kan korrigeres og tilpasses.

Utviklerene ser for seg at denne teknologien vil kunne anvendes blant annet innen yoga og pilates, som er veldig presisjons-drevet. I tillegg kan golfere forbedre swingen sin. Eller den kan anvendes som en del av fysikalsk terapi.

I klippet under kan du se hva en presisjon på 0.01 mm. gjør når man faktisk bruker teknologien, og ikke bare ser på en haug tall. Produktet er en liten USB-dings med sensorer og kameraer som fungerer sammen med Leap Motions egenutviklede programvare.



Selskapet gir i disse dager utviklerne demo-kits og en SDK-pakke. Lanseringen av flerbrukerversjon ventes allerede tidlig neste år til en relativt utrolig god pris: 70 dollar (rundt 400 kroner).

Patterned by Nature

Patterned by Nature was commissioned by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (naturalsciences.org) for the newly built Nature Research Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. 10 feet wide and 90 feet in length, this sculptural ribbon winds through the five story atrium of the museum and is made of 3600 tiles of LCD glass. It runs on roughly 75 watts, less power than a laptop computer. Animations are created by independently varying the transparency of each piece of glass.

He extracted a history of 35,801 latitude/longitude codes from his iPhone after discovering in April 2011 that iPhones store location data without the users’ knowledge. He then plotted the geocodes onto a map for each day and published it as a book, Where the f**k was I.
