The Simulated Environment for Theatre (SET) is a 3D environment for reading, exploring, and directing plays. Designed and developed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers, SET uses the Unity game engine to allow users to both author and playback digital theatrical productions.

Why Copyrighted Coffee May Cripple the Internet of Things

Limiting the interoperability of the Internet of Things could also restrict systems far less trivial than coffee or kitchen appliances; it might have the greatest impact on infrastructure, in important questions that get decided far from the eyes of everyday consumers. As Kominers points out, hospitals are starting to benefit from interconnected sensors, which are finding their way into everything from medication dispensers to doctors’ pens to even (though monitoring devices) the patients themselves. One might hope that hospitals would ensure interoperability within their own internal systems. But without open standards, one hospital’s “Intranet of Things” might not be able to talk to another hospital’s network, causing much usable data to be lost.

When the Art Is Watching You

One morning last week, a team of experts at New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum searched for hidden spots in the rotunda to conceal tiny electronic transmitters. The devices will enable the museum to send messages about artworks to visitors via their smartphones while at the same time collect details about the comings and goings of those guests.

At today’s museums, all eyes aren’t just on the art. They’re on the visitors.

Across the country, museums are mining increasingly detailed layers of information about their guests, employing some of the same strategies that companies like Macy’s, Netflix and Wal-Mart have used in recent years to boost sales by tracking customer behavior. Museums are using the visitor data to inform decisions on everything from exhibit design to donor outreach to gift-shop marketing strategies.

GPS lamps and the (in)visible landscape of the networked city

Satellite Lamps is a project investigating one of the most important contemporary infrastructures, the Global Positioning System or GPS. It’s a project curated by Einar Sneve Martinussen, Jørn Knutsen and Timo Arnall as part of the Yourban research project at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and continues their previous work on revealing the materials of technologies that started in 2009 with RFID and Immaterials: Light Painting Wifi. The project uses Arduinoextensively, and is also thoroughly documented:

GPS is widely used yet it’s invisible and few of us really have any idea of how it works or how it inhabits our everyday environments. We created a series of Lamps that change brightness according to the accuracy of received GPS signals, and when we photograph them as timelapse films, we start to get a picture of how these signals behave in actual urban spaces.

Når begrepet performance står sentralt i denne denne forskningsrapporten, er for å vise at både  festivaler og turisme kan forstås som iscenesatt aktivitet, langs en skala fra den rituelle og avgrensede stedsbruken, til den heterogene og mangfoldige stedsbruken. Begrepet performance, som ekspressiv og utfoldende menneskelig handling, kan gi oss bedre innsikt i prosesser som bidrar til at steder både blir sosialt konstruert, «brukt» og opplevd (Thrift & Dewsbury 2000, Carlson 2004).

Mennesker tilskriver steder betydning og mening i skjæringspunktet  mellom de verdier og holdninger (kontekstuelle forutsetning) de bringer med seg, og graden av åpenhet og følelsesmessig involvering i slike møter. Steder får dermed en sterk privat karakter knyttet til personliggjøringen av dem, noe som kommer til uttrykk i begreper som stedstilhørighet og stedstilknytning, «sense of place». Performance som inngang til studier av festivaler og turisme gir også mulighet for fange «nåets» eller det umiddelbare levde livets geografi, noe som ofte har blitt oversett i konvensjonelle geografiske studier.

Las Vegas street lights can record your conversations

Las Vegas is currently installing Intellistreet lights to their well-lit city. But Intellistreets are not just any street-lighting system.

The wireless, LED lighting, computer-operated lights are not only capable of illuminating streets, they can also play music, interact with pedestrians and are equipped with video screens, which can display police alerts, weather alerts and traffic information. The high tech lights can also stream live video of activity in the surrounding area.

But there's one major concern.These new street lights, being rolled out with the aid of government funding, are also capable of recording video and audio.
